George Georgiou
Dr George Georgiou, is acting Director General of Financial Audits within the Ministry of National Economy and Finance, and Chairman ex officio of the Audit Coordination Committee. He holds a PhD in the field of financial planning from Strathclyde University, Scotland, UK. He is a Certified Government Audit Professional, Certified Internal Control Auditor, Certified Control Specialist, and Certified Fraud Examiner.
Dr Georgiou has served in various posts in the European Institutions as an expert on European Financial Affairs, Budget and Audit. He was appointed as the first Internal Auditor within the the European Defense Agency in Brussels establishing the mission of Internal Audit. He is the author of two books on Internal Audit and Performance audit. For his distinguished services has been awarded by the Hellenic Minister of Finance, the Chief Executive of European Defence Agency and the Polish Institute of Internal Controls.
Recently, his General Directorate who is Heading received two Gold Awards on Compliance and risk management based on the achievements and audit methodology.
He has contributed for the elaboration of the first worldwide Guide how to assess and audit ESG matters, which was published by Public Expenditure Management Peer Assisted Learning network (PEMPAL), an International Organisation which facilitates the exchange of professional experience and knowledge transfer among public finance management (PFM) practitioners across the Europe and Central Asia (ECA) countries.
He has published a numerous of articles related to financial and audit issues in International and European Journals.
